San Diego Food System Alliance presents…
2018 Healthy Food Access Forum: Value of CalFresh for the Local Food Economy
Exploring the intersection of access to healthy, local food and economic development

Date/ Time: Monday, June 4th 9:30am-2:00pm
Venue: Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank 9850 Distribution Ave, San Diego, CA 92121

Accessing healthy food is a challenge for too many Americans—particularly those living in low-income neighborhoods, communities of color, and rural and tribal areas. In San Diego, nearly half a million are food insecure and majority live in neighborhoods without easy access to fresh, affordable, and nutritious food options. Increasing accessibility creates good neighborhood jobs and can be a powerful force of revitalization for disinvested communities.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), CalFresh in California, is a critical tool for providing nutrition to San Diegans. Through the Farm Bill, the current administration is promising deep cuts and structural changes to SNAP that will harm families, seniors, people with disabilities, veterans and Americans struggling with unemployment and underemployment. In 2017, $476 million dollars were issued for CalFresh in San Diego and generated over $737 million for the food economy.
